Meaning Woven into Nature

Posts concerning the world and universe of chemistry, biology, physics, and pink clouds at dusk. Anything which causes wonder in the human soul is fair game for being interpreted as a sermon from nature. There’s preaching everywhere!

Folded into the Cosmic Blanket: Poem

Where you going? she chirps from the kitchen.

Out for a walk. Want to come? We strap on our sneaks…

The inside walls of our home have grown stale, set,

Like slightly lemon Jello with pieces of fruit stuck inside,

Mouthing horror in their paralyzed, lemony static… yet

The walls outside go for a few billion light years, and we haven’t seen them all yet.

Maybe the outside walls just curve around eternally back to the center, like a big

Little doughnut: packed with sugar, fat, jelly, quasars, nebulae – delicious

Outer-space loveliness overblanketing our broad, echo-less planet.

We’re looking up as we walk out of town, into the verdant chest of America’s farmland,

Seeing the way the mesmerizing moonlight strokes gently the navel of the valley below.

We catch, or are maybe caught by the edge of a cornfield:

The low, early ears listen with us to the diamond box, booming from above -

As some raccoon-wizard stops to wonder at the bi-ped monsters tromping through his territory.

The second book of Revelation, written first, lays open around us; we’re in it, we’re a chapter of it, we’re reading ourselves and reading you as you read us, and the cosmos burns brightly as a sun…

Melting the Jello in the fridge back home.

Depression vs. the Cosmic Glories

If you’re suffering from any level or any frequency of depression, please hear me. You are not your depression, and your feelings are not an accurate gauge of truth. What do I mean? While you are sunken down in the dark green sea of sadness, the glory of the cosmos remains in motion around you. This world, and the universe inside of which it is hung, are beautiful and majestic… FOR YOU. In what way? So that you may take it in, breathe it in, feel the “bigness” outside of you, and feel the glory of the creation surrounding you, enfolding you, nurturing you.

That’s the way God made things. The earth itself is a miracle of beauty and power – a spinning ball of fiery rock with a living skin that grows food, animals, and splendid forests, which clean our atmosphere. I mean, WOW. We live in a world of staggering wonder!

And for you and me, people who sometimes feel the weight of sadness and human sin – the world was built in order to comfort and soothe us. Would you do something for me the next time you feel depressed? Will you try taking a long-ish walk out somewhere as far from city lights as possible? Just find a road or a forest where you can walk, breathe in deeply, and maybe even talk quietly with God.

Look around you at the little things: the plants, the birds, the shapes of the stones and pebbles around your feet. Notice the big things: the clouds, the trees, the streams or river. Take them in and ponder the glories around you. Then notice the macro-world. You stand on an enormous planet, covered in waterfalls, Chinese people, zebras, glaciers, oceans, mountains, cities… but all of this enormity swallowed up by the true size of a universe around us filled with trillions of stars and galaxies, swirling in obedience to the word of Jesus Christ.

And then notice… that the same Creator who made each detail of the universe from the smallest to the greatest, has not forgotten you. He, in fact, became a man – a hu-man like you and me. He entered into our experience of joy, of eating dinner with Mom and Dad, of learning to read and write, of making friends and losing them, of feeling sorrows and grief, of being a human creature. God became human in order to relate to you and me. He did so out of love and for His fame and glory in the world.

Think of it! The Creator, who was never created, entered into the world to join with us in our human life, to feel our feelings, but even more so, to take our guilt and sin upon Himself when He died on the cross. Somehow, in His perfect way, Jesus became our sin – He became the curse that is on humanity, and He died under the penalty that curse brings. He died for you. The very One who holds together the entire universe died on a Roman death cross to pay our sin debts to God FOR US. He built the universe to wow us, but He died FOR US. He proved His identity once and for all by coming back from the dead, and He lives today forever. Reigning. Loving. Creating and ruling over the world. He sees your pain.

I invite you to look outside of yourself. Into and past the horizon in the sky. Into and past the stars and galaxies. Know you are not alone or unknown. He forgives sinners and makes them His kids. Trust in the Lord Jesus today, for all your needs. You may struggle with depression all your life, but when you have placed your trust in Jesus Christ and confessed to Him your sinfulness, He washes you and forgives you completely. Believe it, and seek Him for a healing of your broken heart. No matter what you feel, the truth is that God so loved the world, that He gave His unique Son – that all those believing in Him would not perish, but have eternal life… and that eternal life is free from all tears and sorrow!

Celebrating Ten Years Since I was Born Again

Yes sir, yes ma’am. Ten years ago I was a lost little puppy, trying to punish God for having created me. I did everything I knew how to hurt God and hurt people, yet always had a spark of conscience to hold me back from all-out destruction. Thank the Lord Jesus for that! When He saved me, I didn’t even know it for a while. I just began to realize after some time that I was changed, my heart was new, and that I had a deep love for His Word. Around that time, I began to flourish in my creative thinking.

For years my mind had been suppressed by my sinful “freedoms” I was exercising. As the veil of death and darkness lifted, I began to write a lot of poetry and dream journaling. Much of it was unsophisticated and charmless, but some of it is actually very meaningful to me. In celebration of ten years of true life in Christ Jesus, I will share with you a little bit of the writing I did at that time. I’ll post these memoirs at least a couple times in the near future.

In honor of the Holy Spirit of God who saved me by giving me new life in the Son of God…

Agnes Holloway

She saw angels…

I believed her when I looked into her eyes,

All the neighbors told me to skip her door:

A crisp baby blue cottage with cream trim…

She must’ve been over a century’s hill.

There upon autumn’s eve, revelation and the tide of wisdom rose.

Deep Exploration

I’ve had no difficulty finding new trap doors,

Only half finished painting the walls,

And a new depth for which I stride…

Some haikus in honor of the glorious predator:

Northern Goshawk

Claws of fury flash

Red eyes gleam intelligence

Ceasing rabbit’s life

Goshawk

Magnificent bird

Cut the air and spy the field

Rodents cringe with fear

Swoop like lightning strikes

Razor claws dig into flesh

Goshawk reigns above

Sun darkened by wings

Look up, oh critters of earth

Demise from the skies

Brown speckled feathers

Handsome hawk your wings spread wide

Your perch, sacred space

Her hunting scream heard

Her razor talons flexing

Her humor is death

Why do the winds blow?

How high can the white sky flow?

Yes, the goshawk knows

Poem: November Joys

When sugar blooms dark red cider

Hot in the pot

Mulling spices to chase away

The giant blue winter who is growing southward

We hear his distant groans growing

Closer

And closer we join under the cover of early dark

So hope love faith may be mingled

With the cracking snaps of the radiant blaze

The power of country market fry cakes at 10:00 pm.

Weep with Those Who Weep: Upon the Death of R.C. Sproul Jr.’s Daughter Shannon

Earlier today, R.C. Sproul Jr.’s daughter Shannon passed away and was caught into the arms of her gracious Creator. Only a little while ago this year his wife Denise passed away from cancer. R.C. Sproul Jr. has been transparent and honest in public (I follow him on Twitter) about his pain in losing Denise, while also relating joy and trust in God for all His good will to be done.

Shannon was a child with a serious medical disability whose life was definitively different than those of all her siblings, yet they all shared in the most important thing: the glorious love of Christ Jesus manifested through godly family. Although I don’t know this family personally, I am drawn into their joys and their grieving as I look on from afar. The grieving is obvious, but some people may wonder what joy I could be talking about. Read on and see…

I encourage you to watch this short clip from Joni Eareckson Tada’s TV show highlighting Sproul’s daughter Shannon. You will see the tragedy of her disability received as a God-given gift of grace. The reality of God’s complete control over our suffering is the obvious anchor for the Sproul family. In this video you will also see the now deceased Denise Sproul – and her caring, strong personality shines through just as R.C. so often describes her.

This all speaks to me in technicolor and 3-D of the love of God, His mercies, and His providential allowance of pain to draw us to Himself. Please pray for the Sprouls.

The Sproul segment starts about 14 minutes in. Please do visit and watch.

Some Glimpses of Beauty from Spain

This is the type of thing which originally inspired Interpreting the Cosmos. There is such a fascinating variety of glory to be seen and enjoyed!

Look at the stunning array of birds from Spain in this video: diverse, colorful, intelligent, and just plain cool. They reflect the Source of their life, and He is awesome. Enjoy… (Just over 4 minute video and well worth the time).

Cosmic Cousin Mars

Curiosity captures its own shadow on Mars

With the recent successful landing of NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity, we earthlings have been treated to a new tasting of photos from the red planet, and they have been SOCOOL. Have you seen the 360° panorama here? Fantastic.

Driven to Explore and Discover

The Creator of the cosmos made it to be irresistible. We could no more stay out of the stars than a four year-old could stay out of finger paints and a 50′x50′ sheet of crisp white paper. Star Trek, baby.

I made you a blog-ollage of wild Mars photos. Look long, look with a child’s eyes. Allow a sense of wonder to fill you like high tide cleansing the jagged rocks. Don’t be bored at first glance: stare a little. Think a little. Gasp a little. We live in the wonderverse. Most of these photos were taken from our Mars Reconaissance satellite.

Be grateful to be alive in 2012. Galileo is so jealous.

Oh, and don’t mind my attempt at a poetic response :-)

Indians’ faces and ebony seas…

and lacy white whispers

…while these seem like trees

  Little red cousin

what do you hide?

with volcanoes so large we could fit cities inside…

Wild dust dream

You blow our minds.

pausing to ponder each one of your lines…

pausing to ponder, each of your signs…

Your icy blue canyons and unearthly snow…

and martian glaciers hold a lily white pose.

In winds unfamiliar we watch your dust blow…

Where Shatner and Stewart could not truly go…

but little red Rover and Curiosity show

and spark in our scientists new wonder aglow,

to find out if life elsewhere could grow.

Yet one thing in all of your beauty is not…

of queries an answer which cannot be wrought.

The ruby dust oracle – cosmic intrigue

Yet finding the origin, out of our league…

Careful silence.

No clues but to speak,

Of glorious majesty which thought of your deeps…

Of greatness beyond yours by infinite leaps…

                                                             Of wonder-led creation

                                                                                                      Eternally breathed.

One (Big) Breath to be Stunned by the Scope of the Cosmos

Between 100 and 400 billion stars in just our little galaxy… which is one galaxy among perhaps 500 billion or more galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars.

It’s safe to say: God is showing off… and shouldn’t He?

And [Jesus] is the radiance of [God's] glory and the exact representation of [God's] nature, and upholds all things by the word of His (Jesus’) power. Hebrews 1:3a

Grand Cayman Was Wonderful!

Hey all! For those of us who have our ear to the ground, our eye to the lens, and our heart in tune with the musical universe around us, I heartily recommend a trip to Grand Cayman island. The loud, luscious voice of creation is singing in color in Cayman, mon.

See the dolphins?

Experiences in Cayman

The Caribbean world is for those of us who love to experience the best of creation. The cheerful sun turns you brown while the turquoise water refreshes your mind. Cayman is just about the perfect picture of vacation – it was a time to relax my mind and simply gaze into the glory of God’s handiwork.

A brief list of things we got to do and see:

  1. Snorkeled at Cemetery Beach and saw lovely corals, and hundreds of colorful, playful fish. This was a big step for both my wife and me as we are very freaked out by the ocean :-) We actually were looking for a nurse shark that others in the area had seen just a few minutes before! (Didn’t find her).
  2. Swam with Dolphins at the wonderful Dolphin Cove. I held a dolphin in my arms!

Can I get a kiss pwease?

  3. Visited Stingray City where countless stingrays swim around you and eat squid from your hands. I held and kissed one. Amazing day in the turquoise North Sound – video of us leaving it behind (couldn’t have my camera in the ocean during the swim, but search YouTube for Stingray City) here:
  4. Baked my Irish butt in the equatorial sun on numerous beaches.
  5. Visited First Baptist Church of Grand Cayman for Sunday service (Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile).
  6. Rode a submarine at night to depths of over 100′ to see the corals and predatory fish on the hunt.
  7. Enjoyed fabulous seafood everywhere.
  8. Generally soaked in the benefits of belonging to a gracious, generous God who built a really amazing cosmos.

I hope you all have had half of the joy in your lives that I have had. What a mind-blowing universe we live in. What a sweet and excellent Creator. Glory to Christ!

Thanks for checking back in with me. I’ll be back to regular blogging soon.

-Justin
